![]() ![]() Other features in the little seaport district are a Maritime Museum, and the River Lady, an 85-foot-long reproduction of a paddlewheel steamship. The Essex-class ship was sold for scrap in 1969, but Toms River claimed the anchor. In the middle of Robbins Parkway, which leads to the park, is a memorial with an anchor of the USS Randolph, the aircraft carrier that survived Kamikazi attacks and other hostilities during World War II, and was the recovery vessel for the Mercury missions of astronauts Gus Grissom and John Glenn. Huddy Park was refurbished when the town celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2017, and several interpretive placards were installed last year. The river came to be called, simply, Tom’s River.Īnd then (nobody’s really sure when), simply Toms River. Tom Luker operated a barge ferry service across the river at the start of the 18th century, and is said to have lived with his Native American wife, Princess Ann, in a wigwam on a hill north of the river. ![]() ![]() Also in that park is the tribute to that Tom, of Toms (now no apostrophe) River. ![]()
