![]() ![]() Tan won top honours with his off-beat book Rules of Summer. The latter two had Honour Books, King Pig and Silver Buttons, respectively. The Picture Book of the Year category highlights yet more well-known names: Shaun Tan, Nick Bland and Bob Graham. The dialogue with all its rough edges and vivid descriptions of the setting – from grand old houses, to putrid drainpipes running out to boggy riverbanks – creates a believable world full of risk and drama. It’s an action-packed, atmospheric read with feisty characters – especially 10-year-old Birdie, a bogle hunter’s apprentice whose beautiful singing voice lures the monsters from their hiding places so the bogler can kill them. A Very Unusual Pursuit is the first in the City of Orphans, a series set in the dark, monster-inhabited corners of Victorian London. The Younger Readers category was taken out by a more familiar name, Catherine Jinks, now a four-time CBCA award winner. ![]()
